Gardening Group Invites You To The Annual Kick Off Event
by Monique Schnabel
Punxsutawney Phil says more winter, while Staten Island Chuck declares Spring is on the way. So, a 50-50 chance for those who are counting the days (need to mention here that Chuck has been right on for the last 5 years). Crossing fingers.
Now that there is indeed a light at the end our tunnel, let's plan for our annual get together that kicks off the season. This year it will be on Saturday, March 14, at 6:00 PM. Janet and Mervyn Cohen (520 West Cedar St) have graciously volunteered to be our hosts this year. AND Janet will be treating us to one of her fab entrees. That said, we will need folks to contribute salads, sides, and desserts.
As you RSVP to fordmoniq@sbcglobal.net, please let us all know what you will bring so we don't end up with too many of the same category. Does your family have a traditional "pitch-in" dish that is a fave?
As always, should your plans change, please advise us so we can adjust the "headcount". Much appreciated.
Lastly, bring your ideas. Looking forward to seeing everyone and brainstorming this year's opportunities.
Style Meets Substance at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center Gift Shop
by Kathy Scales Brown
Overhearing a conversation about the gift shop at the SullivanMunce,
I asked the question that sealed my fate:
"There's a gift shop at the SullivanMunce?" and Cynthia Young,
executive director, promptly replied "Yes, and you're our new gift shop
volunteer!"
Reporting for duty on my first day, I discovered treasures
galore handmade by artisans that
would be perfect gifts for just about any occasion and all reasonably
priced. Beautiful and fun jewelry. Stunning pottery pieces. Hand-painted glassware that took my breath
away. Cashmere scarves and gloves. Fun clothing. Perfect-sized totes. Books
written by local authors. Gorgeous
leather journals. Syrups. Everywhere I looked - treasures.
And then I did it again. Asked another question:
"Cynthia, would you mind if I start searching for . . ." She said I could! Game on!
I'm having a blast searching for more artisans, more organic food items,
contacting the Fair Trade Federation and the World Fair Trade Organization in
an effort to connect with skilled artisans who can earn a sustainable income
through these two partnerships in the villages where they live - in other words
trying to find products that are good for people and good for the planet.
Where is the gift shop's new location? Walk into the SullivanMunce and straight
ahead you'll see the new welcome desk. To
the left is the gift shop. You might
even see volunteer Cecelia Martinez using her magic touch on the displays. Color-coordinated tissue and gift bags are free of charge with your
purchases. The gift shop is open from 10
- 4, Tuesday thru Friday and 11 - 3 on Saturday. The location is 225 W. Hawthorne Street. Come see!
